Advertising bikes, vans and street teams in Madrid
No advertising vans, no leafleting, no approaching passers-by. Sign-holders aren't mentioned.
| Format | Status | The rule |
|---|---|---|
| Advertising bikes | Banned | Not named, but "cualquier tipo de vehículo" very probably catches them. |
| Vans moving in traffic | Banned | Banned on any vehicle or trailer, moving or parked (art. 2.2). Exception: advertising under a council contract. Own name or logo allowed without promotions. |
| Parked advertising vehicles | Conditions | Only as part of an authorised, fee-paying advertising action. |
| Sign-holders | Not mentioned | Not mentioned. A 2008 attempt to ban them was dropped after 500+ objections. |
| Street promoters | Banned | Approaching passers-by banned (art. 2.1.d, added 2018). |
| Leaflets | Banned | Banned on the street (art. 2.1.c), except to participants in an authorised action. |
Also worth knowing
- Sound advertising banned in general (art. 2.3).
- Using a vehicle for advertising is a minor infraction; using a bus is very serious.
- Madrid's high court annulled the vehicle ban on 18 November 2010, saying the public-transport reservation's "only purpose" was to eliminate competition. The Supreme Court overturned those rulings on 13 March and 23 October 2012, so the ban remains in force.
Madrid sells advertising on its own contracted vehicles and bans everyone else's. It is the clearest case in Spain of a rule that judges the payer rather than the vehicle.
